The cervical cancer screening guidelines promote safe, equitable, reliable and cost-effective services which maximise benefits to those attending screening whilst, at the same time, minimising adverse effects. The EU guidelines from 2008 [1] provide guiding principles and evidence-based recommendations for quality assurance that should be followed when implementing screening in the member states.
By focusing on the core topics of quality assurance in primary HPV testing, organisation of HPV-based and cytology-based screening programmes, and implementation of HPV vaccination programmes, the recently published supplements [2] lay the foundation for further development of the comprehensive European guidelines in the coming years.
The continuing clear need to improve implementation of cervical cancer screening in the EU underlines the importance of re-emphasizing the European guidelines through the publication of the present supplements to the second edition.
